Rylie had her 6 month check up yesterday. She is growing like a weed!! Current stats:
Weight: 16lbs 5oz (58th percentile)
Length: 26 inches (61st percentile)
Although she is certainly not jumping off the charts at this point, we will have to wait a little longer to see if she has daddy's tall genes or if she will be short stuff like mommy. But she is doing great and the pediatrician is pleased.
She did get her next round of vaccines (I think I just heard a huge sigh from all you non-vacciners...please read: "I'm a good mother, you're a good mother"). The previous times she has had her shots, she has cried ever so slightly from the initial shock/pain, buy was easily consoled. This time she was not a happy camper at all! Throw in a little stranger anxiety and a little more cognizance of her surroundings and vulnerability, and she cried before shots, during shots, and after shots! She was also super tired (had been up for about 3.5 hours). Needless to say, she fell fast asleep as soon as she reached the car to head home. All is much better now :-)
Oh yea, and while sitting in the doctor's office, I noticed something very exciting!! RYLIE'S FIRST TOOTH!!!! Her bottom right tooth is poking through the gum so you can see/feel it. I check her mouth practically every day, to no avail, but now she has finally done it!! And there really were no major signs of any teething (has been sleeping pretty much the same, maybe a teeny tiny bit more fussy, no signs of fever, etc). Man, dont want o jinx it because there are many more teeth to come...but...that was easy :-)
Our baby is growing so fast! Trying our best to remember these moments forever and enjoy the long cuddle sessions while they last! :-)

The Elephant in the room...
I just feel the need to put this out there... Our little Rylie is such a happy (albeit opinionated) baby!! She smiles constantly, interacts with us, rolls around on the floor, entertains herself in her exersaucer, sleeps and eats well... But her latest "accessory" seems to have caused some concern and confusion from family and friends.
As of October 27th, Rylie has been wearing a "Helmet" (a DOCband). This helmet is meant to help promote correct head growth. While I was pregnant with Rylie, her doctor suspects she was in an awkward position, head down, for most of my pregnancy (hence my horrible sciatica). Therefore, her skull was being somewhat molded in my pelvis in an abnormal way. From the position she presented in at birth (neither face up, down, nor sideways...more like down and sideways a little), and with the ease at which she was delivered, despite this awkward presentation, her Doctor believes she had been in this position for quite a while. Her slightly abnormal head shape was not super noticeable at birth, but began to worsen slightly after several months of lying on her back to play and sleep. Many people we mentioned it to said they would never have noticed it if we hadn't pointed it out. Despite our efforts to reposition her and give her as much tummy time as she could tolerate, her head shape failed to normalize. This is why we have opted for the DOCband. She will hopefully only have to wear it for about 6 weeks, after which time she will be sitting up more on her own and repositioning won't be quite as difficult. She really is not affected by wearing this band (it is not sinched on tight, just basically placed on her head) and still continues to be her smiley, happy, chatty self!
The staff at CranialTechnologies warned us that the DOCband is more stressful on the parents than it is on the children. Very true! Although I think she looks adorable in it, I expect a few stares and "quiet" comments as we go about our daily activities. It's something I'm prepared for. When I first posted a picture of her in it on Facebook, my mother in law said she fielded some questions and concerns about it and I got a few concerned messages. I guess I should have posted this beforehand to prepare everyone who may be concerned. But really, I didn't think about it because I don't see it as a big deal at all. Rylie has adjusted very well to it quickly (doesn't even seem to notice it!). There is absolutely nothing "wrong" with our little girl, and we have not done anything "wrong" as parents to have caused this. And yes, Rylie would be just fine if she didn't have this DOCband, too. But we like to think of ourselves as blessed to have great insurance coverage to cover all but $40 of this band. We just want the best for our little girl :)

Life update!
So, I suppose I probably should have posted this blog update post before "rain rain go away"...
First of all, sorry for waiting 6 months since the last post for any updates! After our trip to Bermuda in April, our lives got a bit hectic with:
- buying a new house
- baby classes
- baby shower
- weekly doctor appointments to check baby (routine visits)
- putting baby's room together, and then packing it up again for the move
...plus much more!
But the most important event since my last post back in April, of course, was the birth of our BEAUTIFUL and HEALTHY baby girl!!
Rylie was about 3 weeks early and boy was I glad!! It was starting to hit the high 90's consistently already and my swelling and growing belly was beginning to take a toll on me. I actually took a picture of my thermostat in my car on my way to the doctor's office the day before Rylie was born - it said 102!!!
Funny story about that doctor's appointment... It was only my second routine, weekly appointment. I made it for 4 in the afternoon because I was still working, and it was easier to leave early in the afternoon than to come late in the morning. So, as per usual, doctor checked me (pregnancy = no more privacy!). I was certainly hoping that he would tell me SOMETHING was happening! Nope..NOTHING! Ugh... So after a few more minutes of back and forth small talk (nope, not awkward anymore) he gave me a customary handshake (ok, that is still a little awkward) and I was on my way... Still pregnant with no end in sight...
So back at home, it was a pretty normal night. We had a lovely dinner of corn and BBQ ribs at 6:15 - we were actually able to eat together because it was Chris' early day. After dinner, Chris wanted to go for a run and I wanted to bake brownies. Baby, however, had other plans!! My water broke while I was standing in front of the oven looking at brownie ingredients. Thankfully, Chris hadn't gone out for his run yet! After speaking with the doctor's office for a few minutes, we were off to the hospital to have our baby!!
Just to recap: at 4pm my doctor told me I would likely still be pregnant for a while longer... By 6:45 water broke... And by 2:33am our little baby had arrived! Whew!
Our lives quickly changed for the better that night (very early morning!). She is 4 months now :-) The last 4 months have flown by, but at the same time it feels like we have had Rylie forever... I believe she was truly meant to be!
